Chapter 10: Changing Plans

I’m a slut. There, I’ve admitted it. Isn’t that the first step toward recovery?

Tammy lay there, pretending to be asleep, Gordon Lovell lying next to her, snoring softly. She was pretending because—well, as a robot, she didn’t need to sleep.

“You’re a synthetic, not a robot,” Gort whispered to her inside their shared computer matrix.

Because the situation was so ridiculous, Tammy had to stifle a laugh. Here she was, a synthetic being with the brain of a twenty-three-year-old Human embedded in a computer matrix that simulated a brain—a brain she shared with a sentient AI—and the AI was whispering.

Why are you whispering? Only I can hear you.

“It seemed right for the situation. I didn’t want you flinching in surprise and waking your current boy toy up.”

Are you sure the sex-bot program is off?

When Fylak engineers had created Tammy’s first synthetic body, they’d been in a hurry. Administrator Mendar, the Imperial bureaucrat who was in charge of this part of the galaxy, needed Tammy available to meet with officials to discuss what had happened on the Fylak outpost. Rushed, those engineers had cheated and used an existing design they then adapted. It had been an entertainment bot, and in their haste to get Tammy ready, the technicians had missed deleting some of the sexual routines.

“Yes, it’s off. In fact, it doesn’t even exist. When they transferred us into this new and improved body, I personally stripped it out of the programming. That is, all of it except the sensory inputs you insisted you wanted to keep.”

Keeping them might not have been one of my brightest ideas.

“You think?” Gort chided her. “But enough chit-chat. I didn’t butt into your thoughts for—what is it you Humans say—shits and giggles?”

What’s wrong? Tammy asked suddenly, focused. Snarky as Gort was, he’d have been content to sit and listen to her berate herself.

If he interrupted…

“Good to see your part of our matrix hasn’t melted down,” Gort responded. “First, and you need to do this now, you need to walk-of-shame your ass out of the hunk’s room. Gunny Shepherd is on the way with a priority message for your Lovell.”

Fuck.

“You already did that.”

Tammy quickly but stealthily disentangled herself from the American Marine and slid out of the bed. Quickly gathering her skinsuit and then her armor, she headed toward the door.

Is there anyone in the passageway?

Gort understood what, and more importantly, why, she was asking.

“Hurry.”

Naked, with arms full of clothing and armor, Tammy dashed out the door. Fortunately, her suite was next to Gordo’s. The door opened as she approached.

Thanks, Gort, she told her AI friend, knowing he’d triggered the door to open.

“We’re a team, even if one of us occasionally makes poor life choices.”

I promise not to hold them against you.

She heard her friend snort inside her head.

Now, what’s going on that has the gunny coming to wake Gordon up?

Tammy tossed the armor and clothing onto her bed, then grabbed the skinsuit and began shimmying into it. A brief smile flickered across her face as she remembered the sparkle in Gordo’s eyes as she’d shimmied out of the suit.
